In Southwold, community isn't just a place where we live—it is something we actively build together. For over five decades, the Optimist Club of Fingal - Shedden and District have stood at the forefront of that mission, driven by a shared, inspiring motto: "Friend of Youth".

How It All Began

Back in February 1973, the township’s very first service club was born—the Fingal Optimist Club. At the time, Fingal was a thriving softball community. However, following property changes at the old diamond in the mid-1960s, local league play had shifted elsewhere, leaving Fingal without a proper home field.

Rallying around a clear goal—building a brand-new ball park—local ballplayers and community members united to form a volunteer force. Through grassroots fundraising like the legendary Fingal Optimist (launched in July 1973), the club raised the funds needed to open the Fingal Optimist Park softball facility in September 1977.

Growth and Impact Across Southwold

The momentum didn't stop there. By November 1975, the township welcomed its second club, the Talbotville Optimist Club, expanding youth advocacy and community improvement into new neighborhoods.

Over the decades, the Optimists evolved with the community:

  • Inclusivity & Expansion: In the early 2000s, the Fingal Optimists welcomed female volunteers, bringing fresh ideas and energy. The group later rebranded as the Fingal-Shedden and District Optimist Club to represent a broader regional footprint.

  • Youth Programs: From sponsoring minor sports (softball, soccer, hockey) to hosting soapbox derbies, oratorical contests, bicycle rodeos, Easter egg hunts, and Halloween parties, generations of local youth have grown up with Optimist support.

  • Community Partnerships: The clubs have partnered on major infrastructure and civic initiatives, including funding for the Southwold Keystone Complex, the Shedden Library, hospice developments, and local parks.

Beloved Community Traditions

If you’ve enjoyed local family events in Southwold, chances are an Optimist volunteer helped make it happen:

  • Fingal Santa Claus Parade: Running annually since December 1974.

  • Victoria Day / Canada Day Fireworks: A tradition started in 1976 that continues to light up the night sky for local families.

  • Local Festivals: Active participation in events like Winterfest, the Rosy Rhubarb Festival, and the Shedden Tractor Pull.

For more than 50 years, the Southwold Optimist Clubs have proven that when dedicated neighbors come together, incredible things happen.
